5 fantastic reasons you should use solar power for your motorhome

Have you considered investing in solar power for your motorhome? If so, here are 5 reasons why you should consider it.

It is an amazing and rewarding feeling to go about your everyday activities knowing that all your power comes from the sun. The sunlight is there and using it is a lot kinder to the environment, so why not take advantage?

1. Small and discreet

Solar panels can be mounted to the roof of your motorhome, making them a lot more non-intrusive than you might think.

A mounted solar panel on the roof of your motorhome or campervan doesn’t have to take up much space, and they’re not very heavy, so it won’t really eat into your payload. There are also freestanding solar panels, these can be moved throughout the day to face the sun which increases efficiency.

2. Feel free

With a suitable solar installation and the use of good batteries, you’ll be able to stay off the grid for much longer. This gives you the freedom to travel where you want to and discover places you wouldn’t have discovered before. As long as the sun is in the sky, you can stay off grid for as long as you’d like!

Whilst you’re at it, why not consider converting your outdoor shed to off grid? We’d recommend it just as much as solar power for your motorhome.

3. Power up

Typically, solar panels are used to power fridges, lights, and small devices such as laptops, tablets and TVs. The fridges consume the most amount of power, often accounting for up to 60% of the total power used. To help save power, we strongly recommend using LED lights as they have a lower power draw compared to the traditional ones.

It is important to consider your likely power consumption, especially if you want to go off grid. We recommend fitting the largest battery you can, so you have power for those times when the sun isn’t shining (which is quite often in the UK).

4. Invest and rest

After the initial investment and set up costs, solar panels don’t need much maintenance.

Generally a good clean is sufficient enough for solar panels to last for years. Make sure you do regularly clean them though as things like dirt, pollution, traffic dust and bird droppings can prevent sunlight from reaching the panel.

If you use your motorhome regularly then the initial costs are well worth it and there shouldn’t be many more costs after that. Investing in solar power for your motorhome doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg either, there are lots of affordable solar panel options out there.

5. Save money

This brings us nicely to number 5, investing in solar power for your motorhome can save you money.

Switching to solar power for your motorhome will start saving you money from the moment it’s turned on, however, the benefits are best visible in the long-term.

There are instant benefits though, for example, on campsites where you have to pay for the use of electricity, it’s possible to save plenty of pounds if you’re just running off the power of the sun. As technology has improved and will continue to improve, the cost of buying a solar panel has come down, and there are many different options to choose from to suit your budget.

So why not start saving money with solar power now?
